‘Africa day’ and ‘The Big Sing’
On Friday 9 December 2005, at 2.45pm, the UK shook to the sound of ONE MILLION children singing a specially written arrangement of ‘Lean On Me’. Froebelian children joined thousands of other schools and young voices in the bid to break the existing Guinness World Record. The attempt was being led by Joss Stone and Lemar who were singing simultaneously with the children live on radio across the UK.
One of the registered charities benefiting from this event was The African Children’s Choir and Froebelian children have been raising funds for the charity throughout the Autumn Term. On the day of the Big Sing an African Day was held in school. Godson Ugwudire from UK Mama African and Caribbean Restaurant in Sheffield came into the school to cook lunch for the children and lead Dance and Rhythm workshops throughout the day. Godson was joined by Andrew and David who ran Djembe (African Drums) Workshops with the children.
Parents were not left out; they were invited to sample the African food, listen to the Big Sing and were then treated to a display of drumming and limbo dancing.
Money for the charity is still coming in, but by the end of term over £2,500. had been raised.
